Perspectives broken in Firefox 32

Perspectives currently does not work in Firefox 32 and higher. This is a known issue. When Perspectives runs you will see a yellow exclamation icon and the error message “‘an internal security change error occurred: TypeError: ti.cert.md5Fingerprint is undefined'”.

Firefox 32 is the first version where support for the MD5 hashing algorithm has been removed (see BugZilla). From a security point of view this is great news – the MD5 algorithm is known to be not completely secure, and software should be moving to better hashes. We also want Perspectives to move to using better hashes.

Unfortunately Perspectives needs some internal fixes before this upgrade can be completed. We are actively working on fixing this error and will update Perspectives ASAP. Thanks to everyone who has contacted us about this issue.

Perspectives 4.5 Released

I’m happy to announce that Perspectives 4.5 has been released! This release contains several bug fixes and adds the ability to use https (encrypted) queries with notaries that support it.

If you use a notary that supports https connections, simply add ‘https:⁄ ⁄’ in front of the notary address, like so:

Screenshot of the Perspectives preferences dialog, with 'https://' added in front of a notary URL

Add ‘https’ in front of your notary to send encrypted queries! Don’t forget to update the port! (likely 443)

Don’t forget to update the port number, which is likely 443.

The default notaries have not yet been upgraded to use https by default, but changes to make that happen are planned for future updates.

Perspectives Year In Review – 2013

The past year has been a busy time for the Perspectives Project.

We published five client updates, including:

  • Updates to keep Perspectives compatible with Firefox version 20 and beyond
  • GUI updates to fix tooltips, text, and control sizes
  • An emergency security patch to fix a rare bug with low quorum values
  • Resurrecting the unit testing framework so it works with newer versions of Firefox
  • Added many tests, including those for ‘weakly seen’ quorums and observation gaps, to ensure robust replies from notaries
  • Several other bug fixes, including a fix for notary requeries
  • Internal cleanup, such as removing global variables

The Perspectives server code received one very large update in 2013. This fixed a number of bugs and improved performance.

Perhaps the most important server feature was to add python-only in-memory caching, which will help to improve the responsiveness of notaries hosted on Amazon. We will see the benefits of the change this year as notaries are upgraded. Meanwhile the most important bugfix was to place a limit on updating observation end times, so notary data maintains its integrity.

We would like to extend our thanks to everyone who asks questions, raises discussions, contributes help, and of course who uses Perspectives! Together we will make the web a more secure and reliable place.

Here’s to a healthy and productive 2014! Happy hacking!
